Should Performance Enhancing Drugs Be Accepted in Sports?Should performance enhancing drugs such as steroids be accepted in sports? This is the big question on many people's minds, and the answer may surprise you. And if you are the doctor or athletic trainer for a team that has a player with a serious problem of steroids use, then your opinion may become the first one that he hears when they ask about the situation.Athletes play with other athletes all the time. We don't really think about it as athletes compete against each other but they do. If one athlete was to have a severe case of a steroid problem, he would be competing against people who were in similar situations. And perhaps this is why so many people argue the case that performance enhancing drugs should be accepted by professional sports.Steroids enhance performance in many ways. It allows an athlete to increase his chances of winning by making a lot more aggressive movements and forcing his opponents to the edge of exha ustion. Athletes that are not actually enhancing their own performance, may just be using the steroids to reduce their chances of being disqualified from competition.The bigger problem with steroids is that they can result in serious health issues that can severely limit an athlete's life and even make it impossible for him to train properly. One of the worst side effects is heart attacks, and even strokes.But steroid users themselves may be the ones asking why it is acceptable to take the drug use into the realm of sports. Many people think that taking steroids gives them an edge over others. But these same people will also deny that their own team is doping using steroids, when the results are telling the exact opposite story.A study done in Switzerland concluded that a number of athletes in sports where steroids are used had gained several pounds in body weight as a result of using steroids. The reasoning was that because the steroids increased their metabolism rate, they were ab le to burn more calories than other athletes. However, there is also another problem with these claims.Since most athletes are not exactly competing against one another, no real comparison is being made between the amount of energy expenditure. But other studies have shown that using steroids can be quite harmful to your body. In fact, some steroid users have been killed because of their abuse of steroids.It seems that athletes can still hold a double standard when it comes to accepting the use of steroids in sports. So athletes need to consider the long term impact of steroid use, which is both physically and mentally damaging.
